Putting away the ice fishing gear

I did the deed that all ice fisherman dread this weekend.  I put away my gear for the year.  The ice on the lake is shaky and the water murky so I decided it was time to pack everything away until next year.

If you are in the same boat as me, remember to make sure all your gear is dry and clean before you put it away.  If your lures are wet or have old bait on them, they will be rusty and useless next season.  Also, set up your shanty one last time and let it air out.  A shanty that is put away wet and dirty will smell nasty next season.

It is also important to make sure your poles are in a protected area.  Ice fishing poles are fragile and the tips can easily break off.  I put all of my poles in a bucket and then hang everything from a nail in the garage.  Also, make sure all of the jigs are untied from your poles.  The last thing you want, is your dog getting some free piercings.

The most important thing to do when packing up your gear.  Is to make sure rodents do not ruin it.  Keep your gear in an area mice cannot get to.  You do not want your shanty looking like Swiss cheese next winter.  My dad learned this the hard way.  You can tell where he is fishing from a mile away.  Just look for the shanty with all the duct tape.

If you are bummed out about having to put away your ice fishing gear, remember, walleye season is just around the corner.  This is the reason I love being a sportsman.  There is always something to look forward to.  You better go and get your gear ready.
